A Wonderful Birthday

My birthday was last Monday, a week ago today. I turned seventeen. I feel crazy old.

Anyway, it was a great day, despite the fact that we didn’t do anything. I got lots of awesome presents, including card games and books ?

Ro made me an on-plan cake. It was delicious. Thanks Ro!

Mom made me a mini look-alike. Isn’t she adorable? Mom has made them for everyone so far this year, and she only has two left.

This is me and mini me. (If there was one most defining “me” thing in this picture, it would be purple.)
Here are (I think) all of them, arranged very thoughtfully by Annis. There is a story behind this picture. I have no idea what it is.

The day ended with two of the best movies ever (or at least the best characters ever): Little Women (the newish one) and Anne of Avonlea (which actually got to be two movie nights!).

It was a great birthday. And now I am officially in my last year of childhood to go with my last year of high school. It’s all quite sad. And exciting, I guess. But I’m not exactly looking forward to being an adult ?

I’m going to end this with a random picture of Verity, just for fun. She’s “modeling” my latest crochet doll for me ?

Back to Blogging?

It’s been a very long time since I’ve done this. My most recent drafts, which I’m now never going to publish (sorry!) are from January 2020! And the most recent post that I actually published was sometime in 2019.

So it’s about time for a revival! Actually, this was inspired by my school for this year (I’m starting my senior year in high school on Monday). They want me to write every day, and one of their suggestions of what to write was a blog. I was like, “hey, I used to do that! That was pretty fun!”. So here we are.

Actually, since September, I’ve been writing a weekly-ish newsletter in which I updated my readers with what was going on in my life. That was fun, and I may still keep doing that, but for now, I’m also going to do this.

But for those of you who haven’t been reading my newsletter, I guess I’ll just tell you what’s going on in my life. What better way to revive a blog, right?

I feel like saying that my life hasn’t changed that much recently. But that’s really not true at all. It doesn’t necessarily feel like it’s changed, but really, it has. The main change is that I got a job. At Wendy’s!

It’s been going pretty well so far. I’ve been there for about three months, and I’ve made some friends. I feel pretty comfortable doing my job, whether it’s making fries or taking orders and cleaning the dining room. But I don’t want to spend forever talking about work.

My siblings have all been getting so big, including the baby, Milo, who didn’t exist when I last wrote this blog! He’s one and he’s learning to walk and talk. He impresses us every single day with the new things he’s learned (like today, when he used the word “teeth” to ask for his tooth brush and said “ready, set, GO!” as he threw a ball at me).

(Ignore his girly-sweater-over-pjs look. He was modeling for me.)

The other main baby in my life is my baby cousin Brooke, who I’ve been babysitting weekly since January. I currently babysit once a week, usually on Mondays. I really enjoy it because I love Brooke ?. We’ve become very good friends in the last eight months.

Do you recognize that sweater from the Milo pictures?

Also, I mustn’t forget my other baby cousin! This is Kendra, who’s just over a month old. Isn’t she adorable? I haven’t gotten to spend much time with her yet, but I can’t wait to get to know her!

This picture is pretty old, I’m sorry. Like I said, I haven’t seen her in a while. Also, that’s Verity holding her.

Some things in life never change, though. I still crochet all the time. I also have taken up knitting. Here are some of the things I’ve finished lately.

Well, I think that’s it for now! I’ll try to write updates more often from now on. But we’ll see ?

Dutch Blitz

At a retreat a few weeks ago, my friends introduced me to a fun card game called Dutch Blitz.  As soon as I got home, I ordered the game and its expansion pack, and everyone in the family is loving it!  I highly recommend this fast-paced card that my family and I  have enjoyed so very much.

The backs of the cards are the whiter sides:

Each player gets all of the cards for one symbol on the back.

The solid colored ones are the front.  In the game, everyone works together to stack the cards in the middle in numerical order.

To play, each player (2-4 players with original pack, 2-8 players with original and expansion packs), sets up like so:

The one high piles are called the Post Piles, the ten high stack is called the Blitz Pile, and all the other cards (off to the side) are called the Wood Pile.

To start, everyone puts any “1” cards that they have out in the middle.  As soon as you empty a Post Pile, you can replace it with the top of the Blitz Pile.  You can put a “2” on top of a “1” of the same color, and keep stacking until you get to ten, at which point the top card in that stack, the ten, would be flipped to the back so that everyone can see that that pile is completed.  At this point, your game should look something like this:

When you don’t have any cards to play, you can take the top three cards of your wood pile and use the third one.

The game is over when someone empties their Blitz Pile and calls “Blitz”.  Someone sorts all the middle cards by player, and everyone counts those cards, counts the number of cards left in their Blitz Pile, multiplies that number by two, and subtracts that number from the number of cards that they had in the middle.  The person with the most points wins.

And there you have it!  Now, go get yourself a deck of Dutch Blitz, a couple of friends, and have a wonderful afternoon!

See you next time!

Tell Us Tuesday 8

Okay, yesterday’s question was the first of two parts.  It was

What digit is the most frequent between the numbers 1 and 1000?

And the answer is 1.

This is simply because the number 1000 has a 1 in it.  All of the other numbers 1-9 are in it 300 times, but 1 is shown exactly 1 extra time, making it the most frequent number, at 301.

See you next time, with part two!

Mathy Monday 8

I’m so sorry that I didn’t do a Mathy Monday last week, I forgot until it was too late.

Today’s Mathy Monday is a two-part-er, and a hard one at that.

Here’s part one.  Part two next week!

What digit is the most frequent between the numbers 1 and 1,000(inclusive)?

Good luck!

Eggs!

Last week I decided to make myself an egg baby and take care of it.  I hollowed an egg, flipped a coin for gender, and drew on a face.  Here is a couple of questions I answered about my baby.

Egg baby name:  Orville
Lifespan: 6 days and counting
Injury report:  He has a crack, but I taped it.  He is still pretty good.
How do you feel about your egg baby after a week?   I like him.  He is always happy.  I would be very sad if he broke, not only because I would be a terrible parent, but also because he has gotten to be a little cheering friend to keep me company.
What were the most difficult moments as an egg-baby parent? When my sister first met him, she tried to flick him.  Another sister set him down to roll away and smash while she was babysitting.  Yet another sister was swinging her legs too near Orville.  I think that the hardest part was not getting mad at my siblings.  Also, I feel guilty because I am a terrible egg parent.
How did people react to your egg baby? Nobody really met him.  My friends thought he was cute.  Nobody that saw him wasn’t introduced to him, so no one thought he was weird.
Do you think you’d make a good egg parent? No.  This has been a week of Orville being purposefully left in cars, empty houses, and cups.  I am a bad mother.
What are you going to do with it now?  I’m going to make him the oldest of a large family.  His younger sister was already born, and I’m going to add one every 3-6 days until one cracks.  His younger sister is called Martha.  Orville and Martha.
You should have an egg child, it is really fun!

Mathy Monday 7

Today’s math question is:

One brick is one kilogram plus half of one brick heavy.  How much does one brick weigh?

Good luck!

And I need to ask a favor of you.  Do you know any math problems that could be Mathy Mondays?  I am already running out of them, and Mathy Monday might need to stop, so please give me any good questions that you know.  Thank you, and see you next time!

Mr. Bushyhead Answer

Okay.  I’m very sorry that I haven’t posted anything for a week.  I will try to get back to it.

The reason that Mr. Bushyhead went back to the first barbershop is because he knew that since there were only two barbers in town, they have to cut each other’s hair.  So although the first barber’s hair is messy, Mr. Bushyhead knows that he cuts hair well, and the other cuts hair badly.

The answer to this riddle does make sense.  Definitely.  But if you were in Mr. Bushyhead’s situation, I bet that you would not have done what he did.  Nothing would make you want to go back to the first barbershop.  But you would end up with a bad haircut.  See you next time!
